    26 Jan 2012 | 12:00 am
This team made second place (but it might have been a different story if we had picked our prowler lane better!) The first workout we were third out of the door, right on the heels of two other gyms.  Over the course of the half mile partner carry we gained some ground and our girls were able to get us into the lead.  Neck and neck with our favorite rivals Rocklin CrossFit we lost our heat to them by 1 second.  Both Kaiser and Jamie ended up getting “no-repped” by the judge about 8 times combined.  In hindsight, they were rushing and when the thrusters…

    25 Jan 2012 | 12:00 am
This team tied for 5th place at the Bretheren Throwdown on Saturday (but two teams had to sub people, so technically I guess they got 4th!) Great performance by the whole team this weekend!  On the heavy thruster WOD (25 thrusters for the men, 25 for the ladies, run 800m carrying your partner, then 25/25 thrusters again, for total time) the ladies definitively had an easier time with 105lb thrusters than the guys had with the 175lbs.  That particular workout also included a partner carry that left Sam carrying Nick 100m for four rounds – only resting to be carried…

Circa 2004. Some of you might recognize the figures above from our first Tshirt and first sign (Look above the double doors going into the front room for the sign saying "The Shed").  The figures were an expansion on the first "warning" that we ever produced:   The original concept for both graphics was to express the differences between CrossFit and all the other methods of fitness.  Never before had movements like weightlifting, gymnastics, and conditioning movements been combined into one organized system.  Never before has there been a system so effective for so many…

Behavior and Our Brain - Mysteries of the Brain - Terry Sejnowski>I say often that our genes and brains are Bayesian learners: they experience something and then forecast rewards over a horizon based on the experience. Dr. Sejnowski explains this concept brilliantly and simply. I sat in a talk he gave while I was at the UC Irvine, which is just up the road from The Salk Institute at UC San Diego. He is a theoretician who is deeply embedded in the experimental evidence, as you will see from this talk.Dr. Sejnowski explains this concept brilliantly and simply. He also points to the…

    21 Jan 2012 | 4:01 am
This study has been getting much play. I have not bothered to comment because there is an inherent flaw in the premise. There is a selection problem isn't there? It all comes from the term "participating". Of course, those who do not participate will have a higher risk of cardiac arrest. Those capable of participating would have a lower risk. And, those who do not participate in marathons do many forms of exercise, including couch surfing. I see no point to the study. Why read a study that is flawed from the beginning. But, the long-training marathoners will have a higher risk of damage in…

It was there all the time doing its duties, but the wide-ranging effects of it are impressive. It is called irisin and the…

They’re all moms. One is a logistics manager at a stationary plant, another stays at home, and the third is a middle-school principal. All three women say the same thing: There’s no good reason not to come to CrossFit—specifically Oceanside CrossFit in Oceanside, Calif. “I have to make it here. This is how I relieve my stress,” the logistics manager says. “We make time. It’s not an option. We have to work out.” She adds: “If a working parent can do it, anybody can do it.” The key is making working out a priority, the middle-school…

I had my camera set in sport mode, and caught about 30 continuous shots of Stegen doing bar facing burpees near the end of the workout. In 30 shots (about three burpees), Stegen remained bent over the entire time!                 I am not picking on Stegen (he got a big laugh about it afterward). Stegen does what many of us do when we reach that point of exhaustion. The mind overrides the body. In Stegen's case, mentally he felt it was easier to continue moving without standing up. In reality, he was bent over and compressing his lung…

Sneakin' in one last blog post before 2012...First off, I have an actual educational, organized, and informative post on adrenal fatigue brewing for early 2012.  This, though, will not be that; in typical North American ADHD fashion, I'm going to puke forth a shwack of Soundbites and Confessions to ring in the New Year.  As always, some will be personal, some will be sciencey, and some will be sarcastic.Confession:  I think Metabolic Typing is a bunch of Horseshit. It's interesting that 1) I've been asked more than a few times about this in the recent months from folks all over…

Dynamic Nutrition Beasts Alicia Connors, Steve Howell, Jeremy Meredith, and Joey LutzThis past weekend, a shwackload of high-end athletes took part in what's sure to be known as western Canada's biggest mid-season Crossfit competition: The Taranis Winter Challenge, in Victoria, BC.  You can check that link for the listing of the WODS (which looked excellent and well rounded, says this middle-of-the-road athlete that wasn't there), and check HERE for the rankings.I'm extremely proud to say that FIVE of my athletes placed top 10 in a very deep talent pool of over 50 men and 35 women: …

Yeah, but is it RX'd for you???Rx: A medical prescription. The symbol "Rx" is usually said to stand for the Latin word "recipe" meaning "to take." It is customarily part of the superscription (heading) of a prescription.    Recently, I wrote up a guideline on the use and implementation of IF (intermittent fasting) in performance, health, and longevity for VERY specific clients:There's some solid science to it's benefits---but it must be applied in a similar fashion to how a medical professional would administer a pharmacological agent:The right patient The right drug The right…

To participate in class, each child had to an have an adult stay with them in class. Most of the children came with mom or dad, but there was one child who came with an older lady every week. One week, we got a chance to talk when the adults were not needed for part of the class. I assumed that the older lady was the other child’s grandmother and that she was about…

It's a look of: no days off, many postponed vacations, and no desire to experience any of these luxuries. No complaining about late night running or early morning work. I've had a front row seat to watch this over the past five months. She has truly impressed me. There were several moments that influenced this blog. Maybe, you don't know too much about them. The "fastest growing"metropolitan areas in the CrossFit affiliate community. Based on visual information from Map.CrossFit.com and cross-referenced with the size of each metropolitan area. That information is from infoplease.com. It is pretty neat to see "newer" areas grow at faster rates: Miami, Houston, Dallas, and Boston, are a few. Miami came out of nowhere and just three years ago, in Houston, it was hard to find an affiliate. It illustrates that Austin may not be growing at the same rate as Dallas or Houston, despite being an enormous "fitness town". San Antonio's area is seeing…

2012- The Year of the Push up! No, this is not a plank for goodness sake! Push ups are the most cheated exercise in CrossFit abroad…and in our gym! Ouch! Yeah I said it. I’m callin’ you out! This gym (read you guys) keeps a really high standard for movement. Your squats are deep, your chin is over the bar, your spine is neutral, you stand all the way up. Our push ups, however, still leave something to be desired. Come to class tomorrow to see the new push up standard for 2012 and possibly beyond. It WILL make them harder. You may need to scale more. What a good start to the New Year’s efforts to loose the Christmas flab! This morning saw me break the 1/2 stone (7 lbs / 3 kg) loss mark, since I started being good again on Tuesday 3rd Jan, which is 11 days ago at the time of writing. What’s even better is that includes a cheat day last Saturday, and as it’s Saturday again today, that’s another cheat day. Excellent! To be clear here, that’s done without food restriction, without hunger, without low fat diet bars or shakes, and I’ve been eating 3+ times per day. It’s one of the things that in some ways…

It gets my goat that politicians still haven’t answered the most basic of planning questions: how many people should this country contain? I firmly believe that until you decide how many people you want in the country, you can’t possibly have a sensible conversation about anything to do with the country’s infrastructure. If you don’t know how many people there are going to be, how can you decide for example:How many hospitals we need? How many teachers there should be?How many roads to build and how wide they should be?How many power stations we need to build? How many…
